Giving back has always been important to me. A few years ago when I heard about Dollars for Scholars, I instantly wanted to be a part of this amazing organization. As a class of ’99 graduate from Shenendehowa High School, I thought, this is perfect. A chance to give a student an opportunity to chase after his/her dream. 44 applications were sent in this year- the best turnout yet! While each applicant displayed creativity and ambition, one application shined particularly brighter than the others. Not only is this student wildly talented, but he is incredibly strong. He has risen above every challenge that has crossed his path and still manages not only to dream, but to actually set forth and do. He is a volunteer in the community, a boy scout, son, brother, friend, and cancer survivor. I’m sure I’m not alone when I say I was inspired by his story… It is my distinct honor to announce the winner of the 2015 TWP Creative Excellence Award to Benjamin Mayo. After presenting Ben with the scholarship at the award ceremony, I asked if I could take a couple portraits of him for the blog-he smiled and agreed!

Ben, thank you so much for your talent and positive attitude… As you embark on your new journey at The University at New Haven, may you continue to inspire others and shine your light around the world. Congratulations and best wishes on a successful future!
