Ahh! Be still my heart! Yesterday I had so much fun with my cousin, Alexis. Lexi is 13 years old and loves taking pictures. Since she is in town visiting, I thought it would be fun to have a cousin’s date and take some photos of each other. She was super excited- so off we went went to a nearby field. I brought two cameras, one for her and one for me! Most of her experience has been with her iPhone and a couple small cameras, so I thought teaching her a few things on my professional camera would be something she would enjoy. My favorite lens of all time is the 85mm, so of course I had to show her why I love it so much. I put the camera on the proper settings and then we took a few test shots. I gave her some practice with shallow depth of field and choosing a focal point- she went from focusing on a nearby flower (shown below) to focusing on a dirt patch out in the distance. She picked it up so quickly!

I have to say, I have always wanted a couple photos of me that show off my camera strap. It means so much because it was my grandfathers many years ago…and then he gave it to me. I love having it at every shoot because I feel like he’s with me. A piece of his heart. Looking back on yesterday, it was almost as if there were three generations present. My grandfather and his camera strap represent the past, my business as it stands today representing the present, and then my cousin Alexis representing the future. It’s wild to think about… but I love it so much!

I was laughing as we took photos of each other because Lexi doesn’t like photos where her face showing too much… And I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the family tree because some of my favorites are looking away from the camera! I think we like those best because they appear more candid. When we were going back through the photos I was in shock! Alexis was able to take the photo I’ve always wanted – one that shows me smiling and doing what I love…. and of course highlighting where it all began, with that amazing camera strap!
